Food Packaging Solutions
Build the packaging specification around the food, contact condition, sales channel and route—not around appearance alone.
Food packaging buyers often manage several requirements at once: product presentation, practical capacity, grease or moisture exposure, labeling space, efficient packing and reliable delivery. XLY helps organize those requirements into a paper-based packaging brief before material, structure and printing are finalized.

What Buyers Need To Resolve Before Choosing A Box
These issues influence structure, material, artwork, testing and quotation quality.
Contact use changes the material conversation
A box that only carries a sealed pouch has different requirements from packaging that directly touches baked goods or confectionery. Direct or indirect contact, food type, temperature and destination must be declared before documentation is reviewed.
Buyer questionWill the food touch the packaging or an inner liner?
Grease, moisture and temperature can override visual choices
Uncoated kraft may support a natural brand direction, but the full construction still needs to match grease, moisture, condensation or warm-product exposure. A visual preference is not a barrier-performance specification.
Buyer questionWhat will the pack encounter between filling and consumption?
Capacity is more than a volume number
Product count, dimensions, weight, orientation, decoration height and movement determine the internal layout. For bakery and gift assortments, dividers, trays, windows and finger access can be as important as the outer dimensions.
Buyer questionHow many units fit, and how must they be presented?
Brand communication competes with required information
Front-of-pack hierarchy, ingredients or required copy, barcode, date coding and product instructions all need stable panels. Late copy changes often create artwork and production delays.
Buyer questionWhich panels are reserved for mandatory copy and variable labels?
Retail and e-commerce may require two layers
A presentation carton can communicate the brand while a corrugated mailer or master carton handles distribution. Expecting one lightweight retail box to solve every delivery risk can create avoidable damage.
Buyer questionIs this the retail pack, the shipper, or both?
A Specification-Led Packaging Method
The process converts industry risks into clear approval and quality checkpoints.
- 1
Declare the use condition
Record direct or indirect contact, food type, exposure, filling condition, destination and any document requirements.
- 2
Engineer the product layout
Define product count, dimensions, weight, liner, dividers, tray, window, removal and carrying requirements.
- 3
Separate presentation from transit protection
Choose the retail carton, bag, gift structure and shipping layer according to the actual channel.
- 4
Build an artwork architecture
Assign brand, product, mandatory-copy, barcode, date-code and variable-label areas before final artwork approval.
- 5
Approve a repeatable specification
Confirm structure, material, dimensions, printing, sample checkpoints, packing and order-relevant documents.

European Specialty Food Gift Assortment
This example demonstrates a practical challenge-to-solution planning sequence. It is not presented as a named customer endorsement or measured performance claim.
Industry Challenge
The buyer needs several sealed specialty-food products presented as one gift set, with stable product separation, clear labeling panels and export-ready outer packing.
Proposed Packaging Solution
Map every unit and label orientation, compare a kraft folding carton with a corrugated presentation structure, add paper dividers, reserve variable-label panels and document the master-carton configuration.
Approval Records To Prepare
- Approved product count and orientation
- Confirmed divider and removal layout
- Defined retail-pack and export-carton roles
- Order-specific documentation and artwork checklist
Questions Before A Technical Review
Can you confirm food-contact compliance from a photo?
No. The exact material, supplier evidence, contact condition, food type and destination market must be reviewed. A product photo alone is not enough.
Should a bakery box include a window?
A window may improve product visibility, but material combination, ventilation, grease exposure, recyclability goals and structural strength should be reviewed together.
Can one box work for retail and courier delivery?
Sometimes, but suitability depends on product fragility, weight, closure and route. A retail box inside a corrugated shipper is often the clearer two-layer system.
What information is required for a food packaging quote?
Send contact use, food type, unit dimensions, count, total weight, quantity, structure reference, artwork status, destination and any liner, barrier or document requirement.
Send The Product, Quantity, Channel And Destination
If the structure is undecided, photos and complete product dimensions are enough to begin comparing suitable directions.
